How to safely remove a USB external drive?

How I can safely remove a USB external drive? Ubuntu 12.10 does not come with this option, only to "Unmount" the disk, but not "Eject". I have tried both USB sticks and with my external hard drive.

ubuntu ejecting one hdd partition from dock leads to ejecting both partitions of HDD

I am able to unmount any HDD partition (secondary storage) one by one but when i eject any one it ejects all mounted partitions. Both the partitions are on the same HDD. Is this a feature or a bug?
