This question already has an answer here:

I recently have downloaded some .deb files and wanted to install them. Simply double klicking on them opens the ubuntu softwarecenter (Ubuntu 16.04), but then seems to be stuck with something.

However

sudo dpkg -i packagename.deb

worked perfectly fine.

I wonder if it is just a gui problem.

  • Yep. So apparently it's an accepted problem. – Veronika R. Jan 10 '18 at 11:06
  • Ah, sorry, I linked to the wrong question. That was for older releases, what I meant to link to was askubuntu.com/questions/760638/… – muru Jan 10 '18 at 11:11
  • except that I didn't even get any warning in the software center. Just a blank window. Anyway, since the workarounds work fine, it's not a big issue. – Veronika R. Jan 11 '18 at 12:39
