I have a problem with Ubuntu where the screen went blank randomly and upon restart it displayed the "Low-graphics mode warning". After reading a bit it seems there may have been an auto-update which crashed the display drivers

I know this because I was able to login via the blank screen by typing our password and checking the local web server.

After attempting to use nomodeset, the keyboard no longer responds when trying to enter the HD crypt info.

What I've Tried

  1. Reboot into Recovery mode as described here: How to fix "The system is running in low-graphics mode" error? - problem is it became stuck in a loop trying to load failsafex and pressing CTRL+ALT+F1 did not open terminal
  2. setting nomodeset as described here: How to fix "The system is running in low-graphics mode" error? - problem is after setting it and booting the kernel, Ubuntu is now stuck at the HD unlock (sda3_crypt).

At this point the "why this is happening" does not matter, how can I enter this info if the keyboard no longer responds with nomodeset? Are there any other options?
