I just installed pulseaudio-equalizer on my Ubuntu 17.10 following the answer here with:

sudo apt-get install pulseaudio-equalizer

When I want to start the application I get:

$ pulseaudio
E: [pulseaudio] pid.c: Daemon already running.
E: [pulseaudio] main.c: pa_pid_file_create() failed.

How can I start pulseaudio-equalizer?

To start pulseaudio-equalizer, run:

qpaeq

If this gives you the error

There was an error connecting to pulseaudio,
please make sure you have the pulseaudio dbus module loaded, exiting...

then edit /etc/pulse/default.pa and comment out or add these lines:

load-module module-equalizer-sink
load-module module-dbus-protocol

After saving the file you need to restart pulseaudio with:

pulseaudio -k && pulseaudio -D

I am very new to Linux. When I followed, word for word, the suggested instructions, I ended up having absolutely zero sound. I fixed the problem by backtracking my inputs and deleting them. There has to be a better way for the uninitiated like myself.
