I know this has been asked serval times, but my issue is a little bit different as I do NOT have a /tmp ramdisk nor a mountpoint. on the / I have 15G free. The file I try to write is just 9kb.

However if I try to create a file manually as root in the /tmp directory it works just fine.

Like create a test file from a 2Mb log:

root@wp:/# cat /var/log/auth.log.1 > /tmp/test
root@wp:/#
root@wp:/# df -h

What command, or in what logfile, do you see "no space left on device /tmp" ? – Soren A Nov 17 '17 at 19:04
  • From your df output, /tmp is just a directory under /, and is on /dev/vda1 20G 4.3G 15G 23% / – waltinator Nov 17 '17 at 19:48
  • Exactly! Just a directory, thats why it confuses me so much – Nullx8 Nov 17 '17 at 19:52
  • You say "the file i try to write is just 9kb". Please explain what process or command you are using. – user680858 Nov 17 '17 at 21:23
