So my Ubuntu Gnome 16.04 LTS freezes when I shutdown or reboot using the GUI. The main problem is the reproducibility of the bug, it happens sometimes (but frequently) but not all the time and so it's difficult to debug it. 80% of times it freezes and force me to do a hard shutdown, which frequently cause problems with disks.

As a temporary solution I now use:

sudo shutdown now

which seems to work 95% of times.

However Gnome froze once when shutting down through terminal, and also twice when rebooting from GUI. I've double checked the kern.log and I've found anything useful.

My setup

Ubuntu Gnome 16.04 LTS in dual boot with Windows 10. Both OS are installed on a shared SSD (obviously two separate partitions + swap). Both Windows 10 user files and Ubuntu /home directories are on a secondary HDD (in two separated partitions).

My inner though is that this problem may be correlated to the umounting of the HDD partitions... but it's only a thought :D

Have you ever encountered this? OR have a tip on how to properly debug this or solve it?

Before anything else fully update the system and try again. – user692175 Sep 29 '17 at 9:29
  • @MichaelBay I will do it, but I won't upgrade to 17, I need this version for some dev library to work – fratili Sep 29 '17 at 13:10
  • Nobody is saying to upgrade the release but you must install all updtes for your current release. – user692175 Sep 29 '17 at 13:29
