I am running a x86_64 desktop with Ubuntu 17.04, and am attempting to install Microsoft Office 2010 Home and Student, 64 bit. When I attempt to install the program, I get the following errors

As you can see, the trouble lies with wine crashing. I read that I need to install wine:i386, but when i attempt to do so, I get the following output.

Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
 wine:i386 : Depends: wine64:i386 (>= 1.6.2-20) or
wine32:i386 (>= 1.6.2-20) but it is not going to be installed
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.

When I attempt to install either of those, I get this output:

Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Note, selecting 'wine64' instead of 'wine64:i386'
wine64 is already the newest version (1.8.7-1ubuntu1).

It's the same for wine32:i386. Is there any way to prevent it from defaulting to the amd64 version of wine64/wine32?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • if you have 64-bit ubuntu you need the 64-bit packages. currently wine's 64-bit isn't as strong as 32-bit. I recommend making a 32-bit prefix and attempting to install Office 2007 32-bit. Also, I recommend searching winehq.org for a configuration guide. – ravery Sep 20 '17 at 5:47
  • You can never "legally" activate MS Office 2010 AFAIK installed with Wine so I suggest to use a VBox with Windows running as your Platform. – EODCraft Staff Dec 21 '17 at 10:36

I suggest that you install PlayOnLinux (sudo apt-get install playonlinux) and then use that to install Microsoft Office. PlayOnLinux solves your problem because it allows you to select from, and install, numerous versions of Wine (both x86 and amd64) and then use them with different programs.

For example, within PlayOnLinux I have installed Wine x86 versions 2.22, 2.1 and 1.7.52. See here:

Screenshot from PlayOnLinux

Within PlayOnLinux I have 5 programs installed. Currently they are all using Wine version 2.22 but I could set it so each of them uses a different version if I wanted/needed to.
