I want to play some rom games in the Ubuntu 17.04, I install mame and some roms, but do not know how to use the mame to run these roms, anyone can help me ? Tanks!

  • Did you read man mame and mame -su? I think the manpage explains it quite good… mame GAMENAME should be all you need. – dessert Sep 4 '17 at 6:52
  • If you get error messages please add them in their entirety to your question using a code block ({} button). – dessert Sep 4 '17 at 7:03
  • I just don't know how to congfig it, when I put the roms int path $HOME/.mame/roms,but do not know how to make the mame load these roms. finally , I use the command 'mame ~/.mame/roms/wof.zip -window -mouse -keymap' in the terminal, it worked. – kenny leung Sep 4 '17 at 14:47

By default, mame searches for ROMs in these directories:

If you want to change that behaviour, edit the file /etc/mame/mame.ini with sudo rights and add your desired path to the rompath line, e. g. for your case:

rompath $HOME/mame/roms;/usr/local/share/games/mame/roms;/usr/share/games/mame/roms;$HOME/.mame/roms

This file is also the right choice to set other options permanently, e. g. window 1 for window mode or mouse 1 for mouse support.

  • I see, I put the roms int $HOME/mame/roms. when I open the mame, the "Availbale" menu show those games, but when I select some games, occured an error "The selected machine is missing one or more required ROMS or CHD images. Please select a different machine".But these games I can launch in the terminal "mame the_game.zip -window". – kenny leung Sep 5 '17 at 0:00

You can download the emulators for the software that you need it, install and download the MAME ROMs and relax playing the games.
