Fresh Kubuntu 17.04 install on a HP Spectre x360 with a Plugable Triple display USB-C docking station.

The notebook internal screen always works. I have 2 other (FullHD) monitors, one connected in DVI, the other in VGA->HDMI. Both connections are via the docking station. The 2 monitors are black though the VGA one seems like "active" (not in powersave mode and detects VGA connection on boot).

I have installed the DisplayLink driver

Kubuntu's display configuration (also tried with gnome) sees all 3 screens, all are activated.

xrandr also sees everything :

xrandr -q

The best I have been able to do is this :

xrandr --output DVI-I-1-1 --off
xrandr --output DVI-I-1-1 --auto

This does a strange thing : the monitor is now on, showing a copy of what I had on the internal monitor except the last "xrandr --output DVI-I-1-1 --auto" line. If I move the mouse to this screen I don't see the pointer. If I take a screenshot (with shutter), I see the 3 screens, side by side, with #2 and #3 showing only the background.

If I launch an application and move it (blindly) to the second monitor and take a screenshot, I see it is there.

The only error I see in Xorg.log is this :

[ 6.948] (II) glamor: OpenGL accelerated X.org driver based.
[ 6.963] (II) glamor: EGL version 1.4 (DRI2):

[ 6.964] (EE) modeset(G0): glamor initialization failed

I have no idea where to look/what to try next. Since I have the same behaviour in kde and gnome, I'd think it's an Xorg problem.

The DisplayLink Ubuntu troubleshooting page states that :

On systems which use Intel graphics, upgrading the X Window Server to a version newer than 1.18.3 will make the system not compatible with DisplayLink Ubuntu software by default.

I am using X.Org X Server 1.19.3

Workaround #1 (using old intel driver) works perfectly :

As a root user create a file 20-displaylink.conf under /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/

with the following content:

Section "Device"
  Identifier "Intel Graphics"
  Driver "intel"
EndSection

and reboot.
