I use Gnome with Ubuntu 17.04 but I can't use gdm3. With my nvidia Optimus graphics and Prime Sync, the desktop session does not start. It's a bug where gdm3 mistakenly tries to start Wayland. So I am using lightdm. Everything is great, but my screens do not enter power saving mode. I think that gnome requires gdm3 for this to work.

I have installed light-locker. But I can't save settings. If I run light-locker-settings in a shell:

I will report a bug but I can't be alone ....

  • When you use gdm3, why do you say that the desktop session doesn't start? Do you get a blank desktop? What happens if you either press the "Windows" key, or move the mouse cursor to the upper-left corner of your screen?

  • My question is not about the gdm3 bug. It's a crash and the gnome session dies. I have reported it. Nvidia Optimus, Prime Sync (where the nvidia driver is modeset = 1) and gdm3 don't work right now. Upstream and Ubuntu are working on it because it has to be fixed, but right now it's no-go. I have since learnt that gnome power manager is overwriting the light-locker settings. It's an old-school mess. Aug 5, 2017 at 0:03
