When I look in the DCIM folder on my phone (connected as a PTP device via USB), Ubuntu won't display the thumbnails. If I access a folder of the phone with a smaller number of photo, say two or three, Ubuntu will display those thumbnails just fine. It's as if it's just refusing to show thumbnails when there are too many photos in the folder.
I don't think it's just that it's taking a long time to generate them, because when it does display thumbnails, it does so one photo at a time, it doesn't wait until they're all generated and then display them all at once.
