My built-in soundcard is playing games with me ever since I've had it. It's like the 10th time it just decides not to output sound.

To begin with, proving that it's not a hardware issue, I plugged in a 16.04 32bit UbuntuMATE & the card's working fine. I was about to install a windows just to get proof! Headaches!!

Please tell me how to debug this. I just want to forget that card. Just make it work! I can't really lay my hands on the problem this time. I could do a back-flip if you want.

Salutations! in terminal run: amixer -c2 set 'IEC958' mute

this tells alsamixer to adjust the correct card which is card 2 shown by aplay -l, or is it card 0 ! and you need to mute 'IEC958'

salut! I've done what you've told me and added the outputs above – Mina Michael Jul 1 '17 at 3:03

At this point i would try with a few different kernels , try the liquorix kernel, which am currently running: Linux tru 4.11.0-8.1-liquorix-amd64 liquorix.net, and an upstream kernel i'd test from kernel 4.10 to 12 see: wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . to install the liquorix kernel , gcc 6 is rquried see: gist.github.com/application2000/… – Sary Jul 4 '17 at 15:40

run pavucontrol ->output devices and select the built in card Click "set as fallback" button to set it as default device, check "mute" button state, increase volume using the fader. you can also run and use alsamixer , apt install alsamixer: run $ alsamixer , Press F6 , select the second device use arrow keys to highlight the 2nd device then press enter key) .Use left/right arrows key to move around faders, up/down arrows to increase volume and "m" key to unmute. alays make sure the device is unmute. – Sary Jul 4 '17 at 16:10

This flag was off. Turning it on fixed it.
