I installed Ubuntu 17.04 on my HP OMEN 15(2017) laptop and found wifi card not working. I followed some advice from My WiFi adapter is not working at all, how to troubleshoot? | Ask Ubuntu I identified the wifi card id is Realtek 10ec:b822.

  • I am afraid the adapter is not supported by Linux yet. I don't know if Realtek has released any linux drivers. – Pilot6 Jun 17 '17 at 7:47

  • It is not very straight forward ;-) You can look into Linux source code at kernel.org. But the good news is that the Realtek programmers now commit to the kernel. It is up to them to add support of this adapter. – Pilot6 Jun 17 '17 at 8:11

I just got this working, it is fairly easy all up (after googling etc.)

  1. Install the latest 4.14 kernel with the driver code, (from the instructions here)

  2. Download the rtl8822befw.bin firmware file from here.

  3. Save it in /lib/firmware/rtlwifi. Please note newer distributions may have this file already in here.

  4. Reboot.

Updated Answer for 18.04

The accepted solution here is out of date for Ubuntu 18.04 - the rtl8822be is supposed to work out of the box.

  • During installation, Ubuntu should detect what Wifi Card you have and install the correct driver for it, but to search for any further available drivers on Ubuntu 18.04, go to the Software & Updates program and click the Additional Drivers tab.

('Software & Updates' can be found by clicking 'Activities' in the top left of your desktop. Typing 's' in the search box should be enough to show the available relevant programs)

  • Another occasional 'quirk' that has occurred is for Secure Boot to have an issue with the signing of the driver and preventing it from being loaded.

You can make sure that Secure Boot is disabled by checking your machine's BIOS settings (usually accessed by pressing a specific key chosen by your manufacturer, such as f2 or esc when you switch your computer on, but the Grub Menu also lets you select 'System setup' to take a look at your options).

  • In a few cases, a Software or Hardware block can be preventing the Wifi from connecting. You can check for this by typing rfkill list into the terminal.

one point though, will manually upgrade kernel cause a new entry in Ubuntu boot menu? According to this page

wget linux-headers.deb ....
wget linxu-image.deb .

Then, one may install all the packages simultaneously by executing the following in a terminal:

sudo dpkg -i *.deb

When this process completes you should have a new entry on your boot menu representing the upstream kernel (press Shift while booting if your boot menu doesn't show). This will appear as an entry like this:

Ubuntu Trusty, kernel xxx.xxxx-generic

I used ukuu and can confirm my grub2 menu are fine (didn't see a new entry)

it also worth mentioning that
linux-firmware 1.161 does not contains the firmware required so don't bother on trying that

Chili555's solution from thread Wireless network not showing up? worked for me just fine. Run the following:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install b43-fwcutter

Then restart your laptop and the wifi networks will show up.
