I'm new to Ubuntu.

When I try to connect to wifi, sometimes it will show my home network, and sometimes it tucks it away under the "hidden networks" tab. In the latter case, it won't even let me try to connect, it'll grey out the connect button and tell me that either the password is wrong (it isn't) or that I need to configure the connection through nm-connection-editor (which I don't know how to do.)

In the former case, it will start to connect (without asking me for the password) but ultimately fail to connect and hide the network. I have tried to restart the programs involved with connecting to the network (I went to the console and typed sudo service network-manager restart and then killall nm-applet &&nm-applet & following some advice I'd found online). This allowed me to "connect" to the network with two bars (fewer than I should have) but didn't actually allow me to use the internet. A couple of minutes later, it hid the connection and I couldn't reconnect.

This is a netbook. It does not have an ethernet port. I cannot connect with a wired connection to fix this problem.

I've also been able to successfully connect by tethering to my phone, which is a viable long-term solution, but if anyone knows what the issue is, I'd still like to know.

    Wifi issues are usually hardware-specific. Please run the wireless info script and paste the output into your question (format as code) or on paste.ubuntu.com. If you can't do that because you can't connect at all (try tethering to an Android device?) then at least give the output of lspci -knn | grep -A2 Net – Zanna Jun 14 '17 at 9:01
