I'm new to Ubuntu. I installed Ubuntu 16.04 on my laptop a few weeks ago (an ASUS R510J with a NVIDIA Geforce GTX 950M). I haven't had problems with it until this morning when I tried to log in but got stuck on the login screen.

This is where it gets stuck

I have seen problems where people get stuck in a login loop, but this is not a loop. I can move the mouse, but when I click it doesn't do anything, and neither does the keyboard work. Also, sometimes, instead of being stuck on the login screen, the screen gets black, I'm only able to see the mouse.

I've tried to enter using recovery mode, using the fix packages option, but nothing seems to work.

  • @radbrawler I think it's not the same. In my case, I'm not even able to write the password or do anything. Anyways, I already tried that solution, but doesn't work because the system doesn't answer to that key combination. – Giovanni Cabrera Apr 10 '17 at 13:19
  • You need Nvidia proprietary drivers. You also need nomodeset. – user589808 Apr 10 '17 at 15:16
