down vote I just looked at your answers and they were in chinese (not literally).

I have been given the task to sort my girlfriends brothers laptop. never ever heard of ubuntu. I turn it on and I get ''please unlock disk sdb3_crypt''

I have NO IDEA how to sort this out.

any help would be amazing

    The / or "root" partition has been encrypted. Similar to someone using "bitlocker" to encrypt the C drive in Windows. If he doesn't remember the password to unlock it, not much you can do but format and startover. – Gansheim Apr 7 '17 at 16:31

  • Well if she just needs it to work for simple word processing, web browsing etc, you should reinstall Ubuntu. Follow the Installing Ubuntu guide. – Gansheim Apr 7 '17 at 16:51
