I have ubuntu installed in a VM run by VMWare Workstation. I was able to increase the size of the disk via VMWare Workstation to 70Gb (which I see on the line Disk /dev/sda: 70 GiB) but I cannot figure out how to resize the partition to use this space / expand the filesystem (dev/mapper/vagrant--vg-root 35G 31G 2.5G 93% /: this still is 35G)

What should be the next step? (via the command line) Thanks

You expanded the disk, but you still need to expand the partition and filesystem. Here's one way to do it:

  1. Boot the VM with a live CD ISO.
  2. Run GParted.
  3. Expand /dev/sda2 and /dev/sda5 as big as they'll go.
  4. Apply changes.
  5. Remove the live CD ISO and reboot into the system.

Instead of using GParted, you can also use fdisk, pvresize, lvresize, and resize2fs (in that order) to manually resize everything.
