Recognized and enabled touchpad not working at all on a Toshiba L55D-C5269 Laptop. A search yields many different solutions to Elan touchpads but none of them seem to be working.

Some of the things I tried:

-Tweaked xorg conf files in various ways

-Installed Libinput and uninstalled Synaptics

-Resetted BIOS

Some other people solved their issue by updating their kernel but mine was up-to-date anyway...

I am quite new to Linux so I'm hoping that I just missed a simple, small detail and that there is an easy fix.

Here is some info that you may need:

Some Acer laptops, such as the Spin 5, have a touchpad lockout that is accessed by pressing FN+F7 (or just F7, depending on BIOS configuration).

Both the ELAN touchpad, and the touchscreen, on an Acer Spin 5 will work under Xorg for Fedora 28 with NO xorg.conf file, provided the lockout is DISABLED. The touchscreen will work even if the lockout is disabled.

  • OMG! I can't believe it was this simple. Thank you! – user207863 Oct 12 '18 at 23:42
  • Thanks! I'd never understood what the symbol meant on F7, and it fixed my problem immediately: I'd pressed it by mistake. Note: it stays disabled through reboot, and there is no user interface feedback that I've found to show the state (ie, in control panel). Ubuntu 18.04. – jonathanjo Oct 13 at 16:40

The same with my Toshiba: recognized and enabled touchpad not working in Ubuntu 16.04!

I have a Toshiba SATELLITE L50-C. None of the googled suggestions worked for me! As i also have original windows installed, if i boot up windows, touchpad works. It was also working before in ubuntu 16.04... Just stopped to work suddenly.

ubuntu 16.04 with XFCE kernel version: 4.4.0-62-generic

  • I booted ubuntu with a live cd and touchpad still not working. With this same distribution it was always working until something changed... I think this might be a Bios config problem. – Peter Feb 18 '17 at 13:03

this is not a ubuntu problem.

I solved it this way:

  • reboot laptop, (F2) to enter the BIOS.
  • Pressed FN+F5. Touchpad start to work (you press again FN+F5 it is disabled again).
  • Booting Ubuntu and it just works as it was before.

NOTE - As of this date (06DEC2018), Windows 10 is having major problems with I2C touchpads not even enumerating. Therefore, do not use Windows 10 as a sanity check for touchpad hardware at the moment!
