I'd like to know if it's possible to put a "Places" tab in the upper menu of Ubuntu, such as CentOS, Debian, etc.

Thanks

  • Easily, but what should it exactly show? Nov 18, 2016 at 17:44
  • main folders (home, downloads, document, etc) and the ones with bookmarks such as debian and centos

  • I see, will write one today or tomorrow if no one else did before I do :), or maybe one exists already (you mean an indicator, right?) Nov 18, 2016 at 17:48
  • search "Places menu Debian" in Google Images and you'll see what I mean.

  • Nope, that was a classic menu. All I found was outdated stuff with an inch of dust on it. I can fairly quickly write a basic one (and will). I would like to merge it with this one though: askubuntu.com/questions/803869/…, which would make it an interesting project. The first shot today or tomorrow will therefore not be the final one. Nice question. Nov 18, 2016 at 19:08

I tried several existing ones, but could not find a working Places indicator. The ones I found were outdated, ppa's were no longer maintained.

Modular Places menu

So, below a freshly written one: Places & Files indicator for Ubuntu.

enter image description here 2

The ppa version is a modular one; you can choose what to show in the menu:

[enter image description here]

In the full version:

...or the smallest, only showing recently used:

Installing from ppa

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:vlijm/placesfiles
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install placesfiles

A simplified version to show a places menu, bookmarks and recently used files

Indicator()
GObject.threads_init()
signal.signal(signal.SIGINT, signal.SIG_DFL)
Gtk.main()

How to use (if not installed from ppa)

  1. Copy the script into an empty file, save it as places_indicator.py
  2. Save the icon (right-click > save as) exactly named:

    dir_icon.png

    enter image description here

    ..in one and the same directory as the script.

  3. Test- run the script by the command:

    python3 /path/to/places_indicator.py

  4. If all works fine, add it to Startup Applications: Dash > Startup Applications > Add. Add the command:

    /bin/bash -c "sleep 10 && python3 /path/to/places_indicator.py

About the indicator

The indicator shows:

  1. The home directory
  2. All directories (local bookmarks and smb) in
    • ~/.config/gtk-3.0/bookmarks
    • ~/.config/user-dirs.dirs
  3. Network
  4. Connect to network
  5. Computer
  6. Recently used files (lats 10 as it is, could be easily changed)

Changing/added/removed bookmarks are updated dynamically

  • pretty good, I've tried this on Unity and works thanks! But I decided to use Gnome though bec it looks more beautiful but I'll use this one for the recent filess feature too! thanks

  • @UlisesCT Ah, thanks for trying on Unity, despite the fact that you switched! Nov 20, 2016 at 12:41
  • yeah! the problem is I come from Windows for desktop PC, and never used graphical stuff on Linux, just terminal on CentOS for servers and such, and when I installed ubuntu from ubuntu.es I thought its GUI was just that one and didn't know there's Gnome and Unity which you can choose (I missed the Places tab bec it was on CentOS which I tried to give a try as desktop but it kinda sucks). Good to keep on learning

  • Wow, that commitment - writing a new program to fulfil this need! Very impressed, well done @JacobVlijm! Why is it version 0.5.1-1 if you've only just written it though?

  • @Ads20000 Thanks! A few improvements; (re) moved or renamed files are now marked, a notification is shown if you (try) to open them, different recent-icon, now also works on 14.04, minor optimization of the code (filtering out special characters in filenames) etc. Nov 20, 2016 at 14:44

Update Feb/24/2017: the indicator now has option for pinning web links

Introduction

NOTE: The previous version of this answer can be found under the edit history, althought it is no longer relevant.

The indicator presented below has been intended for a different question, but since opportunity presented itself, I've decided to release it here. The Files Indicator is simple indicator for accessing user's files and folders. It allows checking recently used files, bookmarking files and directories. In particular, the Places menu is specifically relevant to this question.

enter image description here

enter image description here

As you can see from the screenshot, the indicator also supports locales other than English, so if your system uses something other than English, it will work.

Update: indicator now also supports launching .desktop files that have been pinned. For instance if you have firefox.desktop pinned, it will launch firefox. Thus, the indicator can be used as quick launcher for programs. The feature is on the way into PPA at the time of writing (Nov 19, 7:53 pm GMT, should take about 24 hours to process), but is already on github as well as here, in updated source code.

Obtaining the indicator

The indicator is available from my personal PPA as well as GitHub. Use the following steps to obtain it:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:1047481448-2/sergkolo
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install files-indicator

#!/usr/bin/env python3

Configurations

The indicator is configured via two json files stored in user's home directory.

~/.files_indicator.json controls user interface , the length of menu entries and maximum numbers in the Recent Files Menu.

{
    "name_length": 30,
    "max_items": 10
}

The ~/.pinned_files.json controls the lists of pinned files and folders. Each item is a list/array.

{
    "dirs": [
        "/home/xieerqi/\u56fe\u7247/Wallpapers"
    ],
    "files": [
        "/home/xieerqi/work_in_progress/videonauth_code.py",
        "/home/xieerqi/work_in_progress/spin_button.py"
    ]
}

  • Wow, impressed that you created a solution to this problem too! :D

  • @Ads20000 Thanks :) This indicator originally was meant to be only for recent files. When I saw the question I thought the feature would be nice to add to the indicator ,too, plus it was very simple to implement - took me pretty much one morning and 2 cups of coffee :) Nov 20, 2016 at 15:05
  • Your work also made it into an OMG! Ubuntu! article! :D

Okay guys what I did was just installing Ubuntu-Gnome and enable the 'Places' extension in Tweak tool and got it. Gotta say Ubuntu Gnome looks much more better than Unity

See the "Lugares" tab

  • Wise choice. It was apparent from the beginning you're leaning towards using GNOME, since it's more familiar to you from CentOS. What they use in CentOS is GNOME Flashback, by the way. It's meant to be visually similar to previous version yet use newer technology. As for Unity, it might not be for everyone, though I personally dislike GNOME a lot for their constant removal of features and making development complex. Nov 20, 2016 at 12:38
  • Yeah exactly, I'm kinda "noob" into Linux or "outdated" as you prefer to say it. I mean, I've always used a terminal for servers on CentOS, and not much of graphic stuff, I didn't know there were different graphical options such as Unity and Gnome, I just thought Ubuntu can only look the way it does from the ubuntu.com download package, CentOS the way it does from the official webpage, etc. Didn't know there were different graphical choices you can have. Good to keep on learning. @Serg

  • Let me ask you this question: If you absolutely had to use Unity desktop, which other things you wish it had ? ( Obviously, I'm trying to research ideas for future uses :) Nov 20, 2016 at 12:58
  • the only thing I can think of is the "Places" tab or "Applications" (which I don't really use) the rest is available in Unity too I guess, what I don't like from gnome is that for applications menu you have to click on a button on most of programs (the typical file, edit, etc menu)
