I am using dual boot Windows 10 / Ubuntu. GRUB and everything else works fine. Whenever I try to shutdown or restart my laptop from Ubuntu, the screen just stays turned off, keyboard backlightning on. To shutdown my laptop, I need to hold down the power button.

Acer Aspire V3-574G; Intel Core i5-5200U; 8 GB DDR3L; NVIDIA GeForce 940M with 4 GB VRAM; 1 TB HDD;

You could always shutdown/restart from the terminal.

commands are: sudo halt and sudo reboot

  • Did both, both commands won't turn off the laptop. The steps that happen. 1. I turn off my PC (either using the 'Shut Down...' or terminal cmd 'halt') 2. Screen goes black (no output) 3. HDD makes no read/write sounds 4. Laptop keyboard backlight stays on, cooler fan stays spinning. Only way to put laptop on shut down completely now is to hold down the power button. – Jeremin Freed Meister Sep 8 '16 at 17:53
  • try sudo halt now – thesoundman20 Sep 8 '16 at 18:12
  • out of curiosity can you post your /etc/default/grub file? there are some settings in there that you can change that also might help. – thesoundman20 Sep 8 '16 at 18:15
