  • There is a simple set of steps for Ubuntu. Not sure how you've missed it. help.ubuntu.com/community/MATLAB Nov 12, 2011 at 13:23

You'll have to obtain a MATLAB install cd, unfortunately. Apart from a small selection of codecs and plugins, there are no licensed applications (that I know of) in the ubuntu repositories. There are a couple of paid applications in the Software Centre, but I checked and MATLAB isn't there.

You can either download a trial from www.mathworks.com and use that until you can obtain a full version, or you can try using spyder, which is an open-source matlab-like python IDE, available on the repositories.

Also, don't bother with wine (I can't comment on other people's answers because I don't have the reputation yet). You'll run into exactly the same problem of needing an install cd.

  • Just to add that besides Python + NumPy (which I prefer also) there is also Octave which is highly compatible with Matlab. Without GUI at the moment unfortunatelly

While I've used Matlab at university on a Linux terminal, at home I used Octave much more often. The code is very similar between the two and *.m files work almost interchangeably between the two. There are a few of the more obscure functions or Matlab which aren't supported but by and large is works very well.

Octave also has a much smaller memory footprint and so can run much smoother on a laptop, or other resource constrained machine.

You can find it in the Ubuntu Software Centre, and for more details visit the octave project website.

Have you tried wine? you will find it in Ubuntu software center or in terminal sudo apt-get install wine

  • and can i install matlab using wine? Nov 12, 2011 at 13:13
  • mmm i have never tried to install it on Ubuntu (so i don't know) but after installing wine it can be installed like windows by double click on the install icon Nov 12, 2011 at 13:24
  • There is a matlab version native to Linux, buying a windows licence would be very wrong.
