I failed to read the release notes before upgrading to 15.10, I still had fglrx drivers installed. When rebooting after the upgrade it would hang indefinitely in the splash screen, I couldn't open a console with 'ctrl alt f1-6'. I was able to solve this by booting into recovery mode, opening up a root console purging the fglrx driver and installing the open source radeon driver. Now it hangs in this screen https://i.stack.imgur.com/DSsUA.jpg

  • It is possible that the folder /var/lib/lightdm has not been created. You could try: mkdir -p /var/lib/lightdm; chown -R lightdm:lightdm /var/lib/lightdm ; chmod 0750 /var/lib/lightdm with root permission if needed.

  • /var/lib/lightdm-data/lightdm exists. Maybe a symlink is a better idea?

  • @tokam If it works with a symlink it might be a better option, I did not test it. In my install, where I did not change anything by hand, I have the 2 lightdm directories and the one in lightdm-data stays empty. /var/lib/lightdm-data

  • I do not know if it work, in #ubuntu-de they recommended me not to use a symlink as I did then.

  • After creating the directory, I had to also create the Xauthority file with sudo touch /var/lib/lightdm/.Xauthority && sudo chown lightdm:lightdm /var/lib/lightdm/.Xauthority Oct 3, 2016 at 14:11

A different tack on the same problem. I ended up looking at the same error messages after tracking through a broken / low graphics mode outcome during startup.

I had reinstalled lightdm as part of attempting to fix this. I found after reinstalling lightdm the directory /var/lib/lightdm-data/lightdm, but the user "lightdm" gets given "/var/lib/lightdm" as it's home directory. ie. It's home directory does not exist!

I got mine to work by changing lightdm's home directory to "/var/lib/lightdm-data/lightdm" in /etc/passwd.

Then restart lightdm and off it went as per usual.

16.04.3 LTS for your info.

I had similar problem with me and none of the above suggestion worked for me. To save someone else from complete reinstall better do this... this is what I did:

  • Press Ctrl+Alt+F2
  • Login to your username
  • Remove your Display Manager (e.g. GNOME) and reinstall other Display Manager e.g. (MATE)

After that my above problem was resolved!
