There has been a couple questions here regarding alternatives to certain programs, and I'm sure as more people start using Ubuntu, and join this site, there will be more people looking for alternatives to programs they used in there previous operating system.

Therefore I figured I start a thread to list different sites that list alternatives to programs.

(Please just post one link per answer).

This post should be community wiki as this is not a normal question. – User Aug 2 '10 at 23:21
  • This post is still not Community Wiki.. – User Aug 3 '10 at 14:20
  • What's community wiki? – jumpnett Aug 3 '10 at 16:21

jumpnett, I asked the same question over on Meta. Someone kindly pointed me to this page which explained it quite well. To mark your question as community wiki, edit the question and mark the checkbox at the bottom-right of the editor. – Michael Crenshaw Aug 3 '10 at 18:50

When your question asks users to contribute to a list of answers, it should be marked community wiki. I converted this post. – Robert Cartaino Aug 3 '10 at 20:44

LinuxAlt - The Linux Alternative Project

From the website:

My goal is to provide an informational website available to all linux users. The website is currently in beta form and I will periodically update the database with Windows software and the Linux equivalents and alternatives.

The site has a very lengthy list of Windows programs and their Linux alternatives. The website is apparently still under active development.

osalt - open source as alternative

From website:

Our mission is to provide easy access to high quality open source alternatives to well-known commercial products. And remember that open source software is also a freeware alternative.

Just like the other sites suggested it gives alternatives to proprietary programs.

The Linux App Finder's Alternatives page

This website boasts a huge list of software and a search feature. Plus any registered user can add their own alternatives.

4

alternativeTo

From website:

AlternativeTo is a new approach to finding good software. Tell us what application you want to replace and we give you great alternatives, based on user recommendations

This site has a sizable list of alternatives for a sizable number of programs.

  • Listed that site in the first post. – jumpnett Aug 30 '10 at 21:10
  • I had assumed you would have put your suggestions for vote like the rest, so I stopped at "Post one link per answer" – AnonJr Aug 31 '10 at 11:40
  • Fair enough. It looks like that suggestion was edited out of my post as well. – jumpnett Oct 19 '11 at 17:23

I always stated my disagreement with such questions.

If you're looking for an app and ask other people for suggestions, never ask it like "please suggest me an alternative for app X". For somebody who never used this particular app X, your question has 0 (zero) informational load.

It is much better to ask for an app that has a given set of features (and enumerate the features), or just state your final goal and let people suggest apps you could use to achieve it.

sudo apt-get install synaptic

Keyword search every package available from the apt-get repositories as well as any ppa installed on your system.
