I have been trying for several days now to install Steam games to my 500gb external hard drive. I used this tutorial (taking ownership, fstab, etc) and annoyingly, it didn't work. I got this message at startup:

The disk drive for /SteamGames is not ready yet or not present. Continue to wait; or Press S to skip mounting or M for manual recovery.

I proceeded to skip, and to my surprise, the external hard drive was on my dock... I thought that meant it was mounted... So I attempted to install steam games onto it but I couldn't find it when creating a new steam library folder. Is it mounted or not?

I tried to manually create a Steam folder, but it didn't allow me. I checked the permissions, and it says my drive belongs to root. I googled this, and I found forum topics suggesting sudo natilus, and changed the permissions from there, but after exiting natilus, the permissions changed back to root. At this point I am incredibly confused. What did I do wrong? fstab incorrect? anything? I am a total Linux newbie.

I am using Ubuntu 14.04 LTS.

  • does it list in df? have you tried using pmount, which lets you mount external drives as user? – Fiximan Jul 28 '15 at 7:20
