Trying to enable docker on nova-Kilo, running on top of 14.04, by following https://wiki.openstack.org/wiki/Docker. Added compute_driver = novadocker.virt.docker.DockerDriver to "config-flags" inside the nova-compute charm, commented the compute_driver in nova-cloud-controller's nova.conf, and restarted nova services on compute, controller and neutron nodes. Initially, got the following error, on the compute node:

And walked around it by issuing chmod 777 /var/run/libvirt/libvirt-sock. The problem now is that I can't launch any image from Horizon.Instances exit due to absence of boot disk:

Booting from Hard Disk...
Boot failed: not a bootable disk

No bootable device.

However, I am able to spawn instances using docker cli, on the target compute node. Oddly enough, hypervisour type is still QEMU:

# nova hypervisor-show lab-cn01.maas17 | grep type
| hypervisor_type | QEMU

Any thoughts?
Cheers,

Edit 3:
The above is caused by multiple problems:

  1. Bug report https://bugs.launchpad.net/nova/+bug/1461217
  2. Not all typical docker images, e.g., ubuntu latest 07f8e8c5e660 or cirros latest d8de71c04044 can be run. (So far, I can only run rastasheep/ubuntu-sshd 14.04 063f5e7d07b3.)

Edit 4:
Glance and docker image names have to be the same! That's it folks.

Just to summarize, solution is update of /usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/nova/compute/hv_type.py, as prescribed in bugs.launchpad.net/nova/+bug/1461217, plus the caveat that docker and glance image names have to be the same, i.e., don't save docker pulled images with a different name. – Nastooh Jun 5 '15 at 17:09

I did that and it resolved my issue. However, I am only able to bring up application specific docker images like tomcat, apache. If I try to bring up any ubuntu or cirros image, it fails by giving network error: "Cannot setup network: Cannot find any PID under container". Not sure why it works for application specific docker images and not for ubuntu or cirros. – Rahul Jun 14 '15 at 3:51

Not sure why that would be. Perhaps, take a look at github.com/rastasheep/ubuntu-sshd/blob/master/14.04/Dockerfi‌le, for some hints. (This image works for me.) – Nastooh Jun 15 '15 at 15:57

Can you post a new answer with your solution so it can help the next person? Thanks! – Jorge Castro Jun 8 '16 at 13:45
