I got a new laptop recently and since 14.04 refused to work and 12.04 is a little dated I installed Ubuntu 15.04 Beta 2. Anyways, I've been looking around and cannot find a way to get the wifi to connect. It tries to connect for a while but then gives up after a while. Ethernet works and BT Hub 1 worked, however I can no longer try it with that hub. Hub 2 and 3 don't work. I tried following this guide but it's still having the same issue. I also ran some script of sorts at some point. Maybe this means something to someone out there? :

    Uninformatively Ask Ubuntu does not provide support for development versions of Ubuntu. You may want to report a bug for this issue. Check here for more information on how to do so. – Michael Lindman Apr 19 '15 at 12:33
  • You might just have to set the wifi router to WPA2-AES or WPA2 only and it seems that echo "options iwlwifi 11n_disable=8" | sudo tee -a /etc/modprobe.d/iwlwifi.conf helps also – Jeremy31 Apr 19 '15 at 13:18
  • @Fabby I don't know if it is a bug though. – user399493 Apr 19 '15 at 16:35
  • Just noticed - Thanks Michael for fixing the text. Wasn't sure how to get it into the funky box. :P – user399493 Apr 19 '15 at 17:03

Credit goes to Jeremy for this.

To fix the problem, pasting in sudo mv /lib/firmware/iwlwifi-3160-12.ucode /lib/firmware/iwlwifi-3160-10.ucode is required. Not sure if anything else is needed, other than rebooting.

  • After looking at the source code for that kernel, the rename shouldn't have been needed, you should have been able to copy iwlwifi-3160-12.ucode into /lib/firmware/ and it should have worked after a reboot. – Jeremy31 Apr 19 '15 at 21:22
  • This works, can you please explain this solution? – user99319 Apr 22 '15 at 4:20
  • @user99319 I have no idea; all I know is that that command is renaming it from iwlwifi-3160-12.ucode to iwlwifi-3160-10.ucode. Probably an incorrect name messing things up or something. – user399493 Apr 22 '15 at 16:42

    Not working here. Is there any other solution? – Flatron Apr 27 '15 at 22:26
  • @Flatron, try to change the number to 15 instead of 10. Does it work? For me the above solution didn't work either, but somehow 15 did. – Nadav S. May 26 '15 at 14:48

Disable bluetooth and reboot. That's what worked for me. (Intel Wireless 3160 (rev 93), kernel 3.19.0-18, Linux Mint 17.1)

I disable bluetooth by launching the start menu and typing "bluetooth". Then a bluetooth settings program appears.

This: sudo mv /lib/firmware/iwlwifi-3160-12.ucode /lib/firmware/iwlwifi-3160-10.ucode had no effect, for me. (And neither using 15 instead of 10 as a comment suggests.)

Here is an issue about a bug that apparently is the source of the problems (in my case at least):

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1442411

[Workaround]

Boot with bluetooth turned off. If the computer boots with the bluetooth turned on, the wifi will not work, even if you first turn off the bluetooth. A restart is needed.

Now the next problem: How do I make Bluetooth stay disabled after suspend? Here is a question about that but it's been closed as too localized: How to set bluetooth to remain disabled after suspend? — I think it's no longer too localized. ... I'm testing this now: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1387211&p=9155208#post9155208 -- edit: it worked, like so: (this isn't exactly what they posted in the forum — seems as if I had to change it a bit, and block not unblock after resume)

16:10:40 3 ~$ cat /etc/pm/sleep.d/10_bluetooth__kajmagnus
#!/bin/bash
# Code from http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1387211

# Turns **off** Bluetooth after suspend. I hope it does.

. /usr/lib/pm-utils/functions

case "$1" in
    hibernate|suspend)
        rfkill block bluetooth
        ;;
    thaw|resume)
        # This unblocks:
        # rfkill unblock bluetooth
        # But I need to turn it off because of a network bug, so: [kajmagnus]
        rfkill block bluetooth
        ;;
    *)
        ;;
esac

exit
  • Exactly. Disabling bluetooth and rebooting worked for me . Did you find any permanent solution ? – Neil Oct 10 '15 at 17:48
  • @SoulMan I haven't searched for any other solutions. I still have Bluetooth disabled, don't need it right now anyway – KajMagnus Oct 10 '15 at 22:10
  • @SoulMan Or did you mean a permanent way to disable Bluetooth? Yes, I updated my answer – KajMagnus Oct 10 '15 at 22:19
  • Sorry I meant having wifi working even with Brluetooth on while booting. Actually one of my wifi is working when I boot with BT on. – Neil Oct 11 '15 at 4:20
  • Workaround doesn't seem to work for me 😢 – vipin8169 May 16 '16 at 7:49

Had the same problem with Ubuntu 14.04 and kernel 3.19.5 (I know, unsupported... unfortunately the only kernel where I could tweak the psmouse/synaptics module to work with my Trackpoint Buttons on my Thinkpad T450s - see https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1414930).

I had two firmware files under /lib/modules: iwlwifi-7265D-10.ucode and iwlwifi-7265D-12.ucode). "lshw -c network" showed that the firmware=25.16.12.0 was loaded, but connecting to WiFi didn't work with "authentication timed out".

After removing "/lib/modules/iwlwifi-7265D-10.ucode" and copying "/lib/modules/iwlwifi-7265D-12.ucode to /lib/modules/iwlwifi-7265D-10.ucode", it started working again! Very strange....

I updated to 15.04 and detected the same problem.

Disabling and reenabling the wifi device recovered the wifi for me.

Basically:

sudo ifconfig wlan0 down
sudo ifconfig wlan0 up
-1

None of the mentioned solution worked for me. Fortunately, I have fixed the wifi issue in my Lenovo T440p laptop by just upgrading my linux kernel to 4.x as mentioned in the below post - Install Linux Kernel 4.0.3

  • Upgrading didn't help at all. Rather gave a bunch of errors at the system start – vipin8169 May 16 '16 at 8:24
  • My solution might not have worked as the version you are trying could be different, Wish you didn't downvote. – Jeyanthan I May 18 '16 at 9:13
