Getting Started with Ubuntu (The Ubuntu Manual)

Bash - Guide for beginners (On the command line used in Linux, PDF)

Linux - Inside the boot process (IBM manual in HTML and PDF)

Linux - Network Administration guide

And if you're a masochist, don't forget the ultimate manual for Linux: Linux - Advanced Administration (Kernel, local/network/server admin, ... 545 pages of knowledge! :-))

  • Thanks. If you know about more such books, please list them here. – User Jul 31 '10 at 17:09
  • Sorry I duped this, I didn't recognize that title. You might want to add "(The Ubuntu Manual)" beside "Getting Started with Ubuntu". I deleted my post. Thanks for the heads-up! – Michael Crenshaw Jul 31 '10 at 22:01

The guys who wrote the Server Documentation in the help have done a great job as well: https://help.ubuntu.com/10.04/serverguide/C/index.html, it is also available in PDF. The good thing is this documentation gets updated every release by the Documentation team

  • Yes, just change the release number in the link to get the latest version. – snth Aug 7 '11 at 12:41

There is one in German available by Galileo Computing for Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. It can also be downloaded and purchased as a real book. Most of the stuff in there is targeted to beginners.

There are also some videos available for the book, but they are outdated by now.
