So I installed pigeonhole with

apt-get install dovecot-managesieved dovecot-sieve

But it looks to me that behaviour is different from documented. I think that might be because ubuntu source version lags behind. How do I check what version of pigeonhole is installed on my system?

Simply run in terminal:

apt-cache policy NAME-OF-PACKAGE

or with help of dpkg

dpkg -l | grep NAME-OF-PACKAGE
  • Unfortunately these commands give the dovecot version (2.2.9) not the pigeonhole version that I'm interested in. – Andrew Savinykh Jun 5 '14 at 2:08

these commands show the version of package installed. Is your package named pigeonhole itself? – JoKeR Jun 5 '14 at 2:13
  • "not the pigeonhole version that I'm interested in" What version are you interested in? @zespri – Lucio Jun 5 '14 at 2:22
  • @JohnnyEnglish: no it's not. I'm sorry I could not be more clear but I both provided the link to the product in the question as well as the command line that I used to install the product. The current version of pigeonhole is 0.4.3. In ubuntu it's bundled as two packages dovecot-managesieved and dovecot-sieve. Both of these have the same version as dovecot. – Andrew Savinykh Jun 5 '14 at 2:45
  • Also note, that all I want is to find out the version, I suspect there is no way to do it with console commands if the ubuntu packaging process strips it out, but surely there should be some other way to find it? There probably logs somewhere which version of components ubuntu packages are built from? – Andrew Savinykh Jun 5 '14 at 2:47

From dovecot mailing list:

Pigeonhole releases are not always bound to a specific Dovecot release (nearby versions usually also work). Release announcements contain the Dovecot version they were released with. Pigeonhole version numbers alone do not provide this information though.

Newer Pigeonhole releases add a version line to the dovecot -n output and they log the version at startup when mail_debug is enabled.

Version history is as follows:
