12.10 has been slowing down mysteriously. Normally, in past versions, I can log in, open Firefox, and it will pop up within seconds. 12.10 is like that upon install too, though once I install my old apps, it gets very slow by Ubuntu standards. After login the hard drive will just make noise for a while before the OS will do anything.

Try running in a terminal:

htop or free -m

htop needs to be installed with sudo apt-get install htop but will give more info like cpu use. free will only report memory use.

Look at the results to see if you are not using swap (low RAM) or if your cpu is not being eaten by some other process.

OBS: you can also use top that is pre-installed but I think its output confuse...

  • I installed htop, though I'm not sure how much use it will be. As I said, Ubuntu will not function for a few (relatively long) moments, then work like normal.

  • You can let htop running in a terminal and use the machine as usual. When it slows down you switch to the terminal window and look at htop to try to identify the source of the slowdown.

  • What I mean is that this slowdown only happens on startup. After that, everything works like normal.

Maybe you don't have OpenGL acceleration in your GPU? In 12.10 there is no Unity 2D - it was used on machines, that have old or integrated graphics cards. Now, every machine use Unity3d. Phoronix wrote:

"Those without OpenGL acceleration on the GPU for running the Unity desktop with Compiz will have to deal with the LLVMpipe driver for Gallium3D running on your CPU. LLVMpipe is bad for gaming, but good enough for a composited desktop experience. LLVMpipe already handles the GNOME Shell and with Fedora 17 the GNOME-Shell-On-LLVMpipe is the software fall-back method."

I also experienced performance regression on slower machine with integrated Intel gpu.
