MySQL server stopped working after upgrade

I'm trying to install MySQL 5.5 on Ubuntu 12.04, but I'm stuck with this error:

Setting up mysql-server-5.5 (5.5.24-0ubuntu0.12.04.1) ...

dpkg: error processing mysql-server-5.5 (--configure):

No apport report written because the error message indicates its a followup error from a previous failure.

I found a similar problem (with solution) here:

Check the mysqllogs and syslogs for errors.
