This might be a problem with your font. If you are using Gnome Shell, install Gnome Tweak Tool, a customization tool for Gnome Shell, with the command

To summarize, do what tnq177 said and change both RGB values to #333 (they don't need to be #333333). This is an issue that should have been resolved for ages in Ubuntu Gnome/Gnome Remix. Fine tuning is not the strong point of the Gnome 3 project .... |
