Headset microphone not working on Ubuntu 23.04 with ALC897

Question

i have a single 3.5mm audio jack at the front, which i connect mobile headphone with microphone support. i can use both rear speaker and front headphone yet cannot activate microphone.

input tab on pavucontrol-qt shows three options: Microphone (detached), Rear microphone (detached), Line out (detached) yet all these three does not work. pavucontrol

i tried finding compatible module for ALC897 but there was none.

what should i do in order to enable microphone recording? thanks in advance.

I have an Aorus laptop with the ALC897 for which I couldn't even find the datasheet.

After I ran through other answers on the web what worked for me was this:

• Install alsa-tools-gui sudo apt install alsa-tools-gui

1. Launch the HDAJackRetask utility
2. Select the Realtek ALC897 codec from the drop down list
3. Select show unconnected pins and advanced override
4. For all the pins which have Not Connected as their name, adjust the settings as I have done in this screenshot for pin 0x19 and click apply now.
5. Test all the mics. One of them should be your headset mic. You might lose your laptops internal mic.(I don't need it so it did't bother me).
6. Try deactivating the overrides one by one to determine which pin is actually connected to the jack.
7. Click install boot override
8. Restart

You might run into a device busy error when trying to apply changes. You should stop pulseaudio with these commands

systemctl --user stop pulseaudio.socket
systemctl --user stop pulseaudio.service

And restart it before testing.

I solved it a few months ago but forgot that I opened this question, so this solution is identical to the accepted one. Works for wireplumber as well.
