I have troubles with openmpi crashing. The installed/repository version is "mpirun (Open MPI) 3.1.3".

Consequently I have locally built a "mpirun (Open MPI) 4.1.0" which does not crash. I would now like to make the freshly installed version (located in /opt/openmpi-4.1.0) the system standard for execution and linking.

I believe that doing so is a job for update-alternatives. The output from "update-alternatives --query " is:

Is there a correct and work economic way to correctly introduce my new openmpi to the system? One of my problens is that while I do understand the soft link principle I do not understand the "Slave" principle of the alternatives.
