I have tried removing it via Ubuntu Software center directly directly, but it says Unable to remove Virtualbox as it doesn't exist enter image description here

I tried to run sudo apt-get remove virtualbox-* which didn't work either. I installed Vbox by downloading its .deb file from the official site. Double clicking on the .deb file opened Ubuntu Software app from where I installed Vbox The following is the output of the remove cmd

anjug@anjug-vostro-15-3568:~$ sudo apt-get remove virtualbox-\*

There were problems setting up VirtualBox. To re-start the set-up process, run

VirtualBox is currently installed in my system because I can run the app by tapping on its icon. My doubt is that it's installed brokenly in other than the default directory so the standard uninstalltion is unable to detect it. Here is the search result view of "Virtualbox" in the root directory enter image description here

  • Read your output: The correct package name is clearly stated in your output. The REAL problem you are encountering is also explained.

I'm not so a friend of globs. Run sudo dpkg -P virtualbox-6.1, or with more intensity sudo mv /var/lib/dpkg/info/virtualbox-6.1.0.prerm $HOME moves script to your /home/$USER.

and again

sudo dpkg -P virtualbox-6.1

For lock Problem

After virtualbox-6.1 is removed, run

sudo dpkg --configure -a && sudo apt -f install

  • This removed the virtualbox, however there are some leftover files in different folders that I am ignoring for now. What does the last cmd do? Didn't run that one. I don't want to ever re-install Virtualbox.

  • the last commands tries to fix unsolved depencesies if packages need it. If you are unsure you can always make a simulition first sudo apt -s -f install
