I installed Xubuntu 19.10 but I am not satisfied with the settings options. Also most of my searches on Google feature Ubuntu rather than Xubuntu. How can I switch to Ubuntu? I tried sudo apt install ubuntu-desktop but after the process there was no change. Also after logout there was no option to choose. I would be grateful if someone would be able to tell me how to switch.

  • After definite logout, I can only select a new user on login. No other options. But anyway, I have no password for a new user. – Marek May 4 at 9:50
  • After a seemingly successful sudo apt install ubuntu-desktop I found through another command that I only have xfce.desktop and xubuntu desktop. Do I have to specifically install unity or gnome? – Marek May 4 at 13:08
  • I did an apt install of gnome. Now xsession shows I have ubuntu.desktop. But no way of getting there. Login still does not have a gear icon. Also an Ubuntu error message appears after starting the computer. It looks hopeless, Has anyone ever succeeded in going from Xubuntu to Gnome? – Marek May 4 at 15:08
