  • Try to install texlive-fonts-recommended, using sudo apt install texlive-fonts-recommended.

You have to install texlive-fonts-recommended as well.

So in order for pandoc to actually create a PDF, you need to do the following:

  $ sudo apt install texlive-latex-base pandoc texlive-fonts-recommended

Now the above command works (one a valid markdown document named file.md):

  $ pandoc file.md -o file.pdf

  • I installed these and still get: LaTeX Error: File `pdftexcmds.sty' not found. I'm using Ubuntu 20.04, but does that matter? Commented Sep 7, 2022 at 9:56
  • I know this post is old, but I had the same issue (on Debian, though) and managed to resolve it by also installing texlive-latex-extra
