I already looked at the thread here:
How to format a USB flash drive?
and it worked until I tried to wipe my drive, when it said value out of range

Please note: it is a read-only device, but according to another thread I can still format a read-only disk from the Terminal.

How do I get around this?

Which tool/method did you try? What do you me by "it is a read-only device"? A USB drive is almost always a read-write device, but it may contain a read-only file system, and such a read-only file system can be overwritten. Maybe this link can help you analyze the problem and help you solve it. – sudodus Mar 18 at 16:12
