I'm havinng problems getting my gnome desktop to load via vnc

initially I followed this guide for xfce vnc https://www.digitalocean.com/community/tutorials/how-to-install-and-configure-vnc-on-ubuntu-18-04

working Xfce config:

#!/bin/sh
unset SESSION_MANAGER
unset DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS
startxfce4 &

[ -x /etc/vnc/xstartup ] && exec /etc/vnc/xstartup
[ -r $HOME/.Xresources ] && xrdb $HOME/.Xresources
xsetroot -solid grey
/usr/bin/autocutsel -s CLIPBOARD -fork
vncconfig -iconic &
x-terminal-emulator -geometry 80x24x10x10 -ls -title "$VNCDESKTOP Desktop" &
gnome-session &

im trying to change this to allow my gnome session:

I found a config from: How to make VNC Server work with ubuntu-desktop without xfce

export XKL_XMODMAP_DISABLE=1
# unset SESSION_MANAGER
# unset DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS

[ -x /etc/vnc/xstartup ] && exec /etc/vnc/xstartup
[ -r $HOME/.Xresources ] && xrdb $HOME/.Xresources
xsetroot -solid grey
vncconfig -iconic &
x-terminal-emulator -geometry 80x24x10x10 -ls -title "$VNCDESKTOP Desktop" &

gnome-session &
gnome-panel &
gnome-settings-daemon &
metacity &
nautilus &
gnome-terminal &

This gets me a grey screen but Nautilus is working (yay sort of)

my log looks like:

I did some research and saw using gnome flashback might be the way to go

changed my config to:

#!/bin/sh

export XKL_XMODMAP_DISABLE=1
export XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP="GNOME-Flashback:GNOME"
export XDG_MENU_PREFIX="gnome-flashback-"

gnome-session --session=gnome-flashback-metacity --disable-acceleration-check --debug &

log looks better but non-existing or invalid file:

Follow these steps:

  1. Install gnome-session-flashback:

     sudo apt install gnome-session-flashback

  2. Add this to ~/.vnc/xstartup:

     #!/bin/sh
     autocutsel -fork
     xrdb $HOME/.Xresources
     xsetroot -solid grey
     export XKL_XMODMAP_DISABLE=1
     export XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP="GNOME-Flashback:Unity"
     export XDG_MENU_PREFIX="gnome-flashback-"
     unset DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS
     gnome-session --session=gnome-flashback-metacity --disable-acceleration-check --debug &

  • Thanks. I had this problem with Ubuntu 16.04 and Gnome classic. The xstartup simply tried to launch /etc/X11/Xsession, and this resulted in the grey-only screen in VNC. I had to add everything from your answer starting with the export XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP="GNOME-Flashback:Unity" line, and then it worked flawlessly. Jan 18, 2021 at 14:40
  • This also worked for me! I had to install autocutsel, but after I did and added these lines to my ~/.vnc/xstartup, I was able to log into with my VNC client to the remote host without issue. Mar 2, 2021 at 4:55
  • This is hands down the most painless xstartup script I've found yet. Thank you kindly.

  • Will installing the gnome-session-flashback damage the gnome desktop in Ubuntu 22.10?? I hate doing things that I cannot reverse :( Or does it just act when doing vnc?

Turnns out I had to log in directly to the box, then log out log into the gnnome sessionn flashback. log out then retried vnc and working fine

    What does this even mean? Where were you when you said "log in directly" .. on the headless machine's head? Via SSH? Apr 18, 2020 at 17:50
  • sorry yes thats what I had to do plug a monitor keyboard mouse into the box. log into session flashback. log out. then it worked fine via vnc
