I am trying to use a wireless USB device, 0bda:a811 Realtek Semiconductor Corp, on my Ubuntu 18.04 server. I am running the server on a very old machine that has a native WiFi speed of just 3 Mbit/s.So, I a bought the USB device hoping to speed up the WiFi connection.

I have already solved all of the normal problems with getting WiFi connectivity on an Ubuntu Server. Connecting to the network works fine with the native WiFi device. The new USB WiFi device can be seen, and when I do a search of WiFi availability, 5G networks show up. This is important because the native WiFi can only see 2.4G networks. When I remove the USB WiFi device, I no longer see 5G networks.

Below are some commands that I ran and their output.

$ nmcli d wifi list
MYWIFI_5G
MYWIFI_2.4G
$ sudo netplan --debug apply

  • Is Network Manager running on this server? If so, make your changes there and not netplan. Also, I'd blacklist the internal device. – chili555 Nov 10 at 21:58
