I have: 1) SSD with Windows8 installed on it 2) HDD with Ubuntu (this disk is partioned) and grub loader

Grub was used as default loader. My HDD has been broken so when I start PC it searches HDD and then give me grub rescue (no such filesystem).

If I boot from SSD it still gives me grub rescue (why? It's on another disk). I just want to enter Windows.

And I can enter from ubuntu live usb. Maybe there are some commands to set Windows boot loader?

BIOS, not UEFI

  • UEFI or BIOS? If UEFI you don't change the drive to boot from, that should always be the one containing the efi partition. What you change is in another menu and you select "Windows bootloader manager" to boot Windows directly. – GabrielaGarcia Jul 11 at 14:55
  • BIOS. The only way I can enter my PC is Ubuntu live usb. Or rescue grub. – George Jul 11 at 15:00
  • With BIOS (or Legacy mode) you always need Windows media to reinstall the Windows bootloader. With two drives and Windows installed first in one, then changing the boot drive to the other and installing Ubuntu, we can avoid this (each drive has an independent bootloader), otherwise Grub will be installed replacing the Windows bootloader. – GabrielaGarcia Jul 11 at 15:10

Ok, thank you for reply. How I solved my problem: took out the HDD, knocked on it and shook it. So HDD worked for a short time and I booted Windows :) – George Jul 11 at 15:27

@George Immediately take a full backup of all your important files, because HDDs die a slow and painful death – Fabby Jul 12 at 14:55
