Some of my video files have been getting cut extremely short. For example files that should be 3-4 GB are showing as ~377 MB. They will play at their original quality for a few minutes, then suddenly end. Going through the file tree it shows this happens seemingly randomly.

Running Xubuntu 18.04.2, 8GB RAM. Storage is attached via USB enclosure. The files are replaceable so no huge loss, but is there a way to prevent this?

  • what file system is being used on the drive? For example, the FAT file system does not allow for files greater than 4GB – Nmath Jun 29 at 0:50
  • @Nmath It's using ext4 across all the drives. – Evoconian Jun 29 at 1:12

do you have the same problem among different media players? how about across different computers? If you don't have access to another computer, boot up a live USB of Ubuntu and try to play it there -- if the files still don't play at least you will know it's the files and not the OS or any of your software – Nmath Jun 29 at 1:16
