I know that Ubuntu desktop shows whatever graphics is being written to :0.

Suppose I have different processes writing to different $DISPLAYs, is there a way on Ubuntu desktop to switch whichever $DISPLAY is currently being rendered on my HDMI monitor (locally, nothing involving SSH)?

What I'd like to do is simulate multiple TV channels each running a different m3u file in VLC (looped). I want to be able to to flick between displays depending on whatever I feel like watching.

@reboot DISPLAY=:0 vlc --loop ~/soccer_games.m3u
@reboot DISPLAY=:1 vlc --loop ~/music_videos.m3u
@reboot DISPLAY=:2 vlc --loop ~/movies.m3u

I have a feeling the answer is, "only if you have separate window managers running".
