Many application menus are missing. For example, all of the calculators I have tried (gnome-calculator, speedcrunch, etc.) Ctrl-M doesn't fix this.

Firefox and others have their menus, but they each have their own menu style.

I found a known bug, that has this solution for the current session, but it doesn't solve my problem: $initctl restart unity-panel-service

This is an original Ubuntu install, not an upgrade. I made a live-USB over a year ago to use ddrescue, and now I found a need to use it again. Other than that, I have limited linux experience.
