I'm running ubuntu 16.04 server on a Asus EEE laptop. eth0 have a static ip of 192.168.1.200 and gateway 192.168.1.1 - everything works fine. My gateway/router is Smoothwall with ip 192.168.1.1. This smoothwall does dhcp and gatway for all clients on my local net.

Now I want to install hostapd on the 16.04 server (EEE) to use the EEE's WiFi card as an accesspoint for phones and other devices to access internet over the eth0 interface on the server. I want clients connecting to the accesspoint to be within the same network range 192.168.1.x, using the smoothwall for assigning dhcp adresses to wifi clients connecting to the accesspoint. The smoothwalls dhcp server and is running fine so this is not part of my question.

Previously, I used an ASUS EA-N66 in bridge mode connected to the same switch as the server and it worked just fine, but the EA-N66 is now dead and I want to archive the same functionality using hostapd on the server. All the toturials i have found on the net refeers to installing DHCP server to deal with DHCP for clients, but I want the Smoothwall to do this service. Also, most tutorials describe that you must add wlan0 to /etc/network/interfaces to get a static ip for that interface. When I try to add:

       # interfaces(5) file used by ifup(8) and ifdown(8)
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

auto wlan0
iface wlan0 inet static
hostapd /etc/hostapd/hostapd.conf
address 192.168.1.2
netmask 255.255.255.0

(my static eth0 abowe, not shown here) and reebot, all external network connection is gone, but I can still se eth0 and wlan0 in terminal whan i type ifconfig Also, I can`ping 192.168.1.2 and 192.168.1.200 and get a proper reply, but I'm not able to get any connection to thje gatway or othr computers. If someone could guide me in the righth direction it would be great.
