I've just installed Ubuntu 18.04 x86-64 with the Mate environment. When I found that the fancy new way to configure your network is netplan, I gave it a try and created a config like below:

network:
  version: 2
  renderer: networkd
  wifis:
    wlp1s0:
      dhcp4: yes
      dhcp6: yes
      access-points:
        "mywifi":
          password: "mypassword"

This works well and I kind of like it, after getting used to it. But when I start the Mate desktop, I now have two network icons next to the clock. I found that network-manager is still installed. As I use "networkd" in my config: can I safely purge network-manager and its plugins or will I run into problems?
