I had an Ubuntu installation which had some important data, then someone accidentally formatted my hard drive and installed Windows 10. Is there any way to recover some of the files I had on Ubuntu?

Ubuntu's file system was ext4, and Windows 10's is NTFS.

Perhaps, perhaps not - do not use the HDD at all, and look up how to use Photorec. If anything can be recovered, the process is likely to be tedious. If the data is truly important, then it's time to send your hard drive to a professional recovery service. – user535733 Mar 13 at 17:07
  • Chances are good both were installed at the beginning of the disk. If so the second clobbered the first. – WinEunuuchs2Unix Mar 13 at 21:42
