Have you updated your system before doing release-upgrade? If not, run sudo apt-get update and sudo apt-get upgrade. – Soren A Jan 9 at 10:31
  • I performed following commands on my ubantu 16.04 $ sudo apt update $ sudo apt upgrade $ sudo apt dist-upgrade $ sudo apt-get autoremove $ sudo apt install update-manager-core Finally: $ sudo do-release-upgrade but didn't work – user8505818 Jan 11 at 6:53
