I've tried the 390 (which is recommended), 340 and 410.

Software & Updates dialog

and both lead to the same result: enter image description here (sorry for blurry photo)

Ubuntu does not boot with those Nvidia Drivers.

I managed to get rid of the driver through the root shell and that wasn't that hard, but I still cannot install the Nvidia Driver.

Which version of the driver should I try?

My specs:

  • CPU AMD Phenom II x4 955
  • GPU GeForce GTX 650 8 gig of RAM
  • Ubuntu 18.10 64-bit.

And btw can I just download it as I do on Windows? There is "downloadable" stuff on the official website, but they are .rub and do not do anything after long loading.

Do you have secure boot enabled? If so, disable it, or have a look at this Q&A – vidarlo Jan 3 at 15:48
