I have an Intel + Nvidia laptop with latest(415.23) Nvidia proprietary drivers running on Ubuntu 18.04. Sometimes it happens that in some large applications (like games) my GPU got more than 95 degrees temperature that immediately causes to shut down the system.

To resolve this problem, I'd like to manually control GPU fan speed and graphics clock level. I tried to generate xorg.conf file with the next command

sudo nvidia-xconfig -a --cool-bits=8 --allow-empty-initial-configuration

It generates configuration file in /etc/X11/xorg.conf. But after rebooting I can't log in to xorg session. I see a purple screen and my cursor is locked. The only thing I can do is Ctrl + Alt + F3 and delete the previously generated file. I also tried to move this conf to /usr/share/X11/ but it obviously doesn't help.

xorg file example:

victor@katarsys:~$ sudo nvidia-xconfig
victor@katarsys:~$ cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup
