I intend to run a KVM host. The Host should enable a wireless interface but assign no IP address to it. Like a Hyper-V Server with the WLAN Service enabled and set to "Automatically connect", but with IPv4 and IPv6 disabled on that interface. Then I want a firewall / router VM to use that interface to connect to the world. It should route the traffic for all other VMs as well as hosts on my local network.

Given my recent issues with netplan, my question is: should I bother? Is that setup possible at all with Ubuntu 18 LTS? And if so, how?

Consider using PCI passthrough to passthrough the wireless NIC to the guest VM instead. – Michael Hampton Dec 11 '18 at 4:27
